British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, has died after a crash during stage 8 of the Tour of Portugal, according to race organisers and his team, NSN Development Team.
Organisers said on social media on Friday that Tarling was involved in a "serious crash" on the stage from Melgaco to Fafe. Portuguese broadcaster RTP, which aired the race live, reported that Tarling collided head-on with a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction that was not related to the event.
The stage was halted with around 20 kilometers remaining. Organisers also cancelled the awards ceremony "as a sign of respect and mourning."
NSN Development Team confirmed Tarling's death and offered condolences to his parents and older brother Josh, who rides for Netcompany-Ineos. "Fin was a beloved member of our team, but more importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to many. He will be truly missed," the team said on social media.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also expressed condolences to Tarling's family and team, saying on X that news of his death "leaves us deeply shocked."
NSN Development Team is co-owned by former Barcelona football star Andres Iniesta.
