Day 10 of the 2026 Summer Grand Sumo Tournament (Natsu Basho) saw a major turning point as tournament leader Kirishima fell to former ozeki Shodai. The bout ended quickly at the tachi-ai, with a thrust-down (uchiari) by Shodai causing Kirishima to lose balance and fall.
With this result, Kirishima's record stands at 8-2, while Shodai extended his winning streak to 6-4, moving him temporarily away from relegation danger.
Meanwhile, all four wrestlers in close pursuit won their matches: ozeki Kotozakura (9-1) defeated sekiwake Hiradoumi; sekiwake Daieisho (9-1) overcame maegashira Chiyoshoma; komusubi Onosato (9-1) beat Takayasu; and No. 3 maegashira Atamifuji (9-1) downed sekiwake Tobizaru.
After 10 days, five wrestlers share a 9-1 record: Kotozakura, Daieisho, Onosato, Atamifuji, and Kirishima (now 8-2), creating a 5-1 logjam rather than a sole leader. However, with Kirishima still carrying two losses and the 9-1 group comprising four men, the championship race is extremely unpredictable.
Notably, tomorrow Atamifuji will face Onosato, while Kotozakura takes on Daieisho — the first elimination matches in the title chase.
