Incheon International Airport, South Korea's main aviation gateway, will undergo a comprehensive renovation of its aging Terminal 1 by 2035, the airport operator said Tuesday, adding that it plans to spend more than 1.77 trillion won (around $129 million) on the project.
According to the announcement, the renovation plan will focus on upgrading infrastructure, improving baggage handling systems, information technology, and passenger amenities at Terminal 1, which has been in operation for many years and is showing signs of deterioration. The project is expected to be carried out in multiple phases to minimize disruption to operations and the passenger experience.
The move is part of Incheon International Airport Corporation's long-term strategy to modernize facilities, meet international standards, and accommodate the growing number of transit and destination passengers. The upgrade is also expected to help the airport maintain its position as one of Northeast Asia's largest aviation hubs.
Airport officials added that the renovation will prioritize sustainable solutions and the adoption of new technologies, aiming for greener and smarter operations after completion. Feasibility studies and detailed designs are expected to be conducted in the near future before construction begins.
