On May 28, during the first session of the new parliament, Iranian lawmakers voted to re-elect Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf as speaker for a seventh consecutive year.
Ghalibaf secured 198 out of 287 valid votes, far ahead of the other two candidates, Mojtaba Zolnour with 60 votes and Ahmad Naderi with 22 votes.
After his victory, Ghalibaf pledged to continue advancing the parliament’s agenda, focusing on economic reforms, addressing social issues, and strengthening the legislature's oversight role.
Ghalibaf, 63, is a veteran politician who has held key positions including Mayor of Tehran, Chief of Iran's Police Force, and commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force.
His re-election signals relative stability within Iran’s parliament, even as the country faces significant economic challenges and pressure from international sanctions.
