South Africa's deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya has resigned as he faces corruption and rape allegations that he denies.
Sibiya was expected to attend a disciplinary hearing on Monday, but his lawyer submitted his resignation just as the proceedings began.
In a post on the social media platform X, a spokesperson said Sibiya's departure was being treated as a "dishonourable discharge" because of the ongoing disciplinary case against him.
He had been suspended from duty since September last year.
Sibiya is currently in custody after his arrest last month over allegations of raping and grooming a minor. His bail application has been postponed to 13 October.
The former deputy police commissioner was previously a subject of a judicial commission of inquiry set up to shed light on allegations of corruption within South Africa's police force and alleged links to organised crime.
At the commission, Sibiya was accused of accepting large sums of money and gifts from people described as criminals, but he denied this in his testimony.
