On May 20, Philippine rescue teams formally ended search and rescue operations at the site of a building collapse in Angeles City, Pampanga province, following days of relentless efforts. The decision came as officials confirmed there was no longer any hope of finding survivors under the rubble.
The incident occurred on May 17, when a building under construction suddenly collapsed, killing at least 10 people and injuring many others. Among the victims were workers at the construction site and some nearby residents.
Lea Casilao, whose husband was among the missing victims, told media that the couple used to exchange messages every day: “Good morning” from her, and her husband's usual reply: “Good morning, my love.” She expressed unending grief at not being able to find her loved one.
Local authorities said rescue teams worked for days using heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to search, but the site conditions were too complex and dangerous. So far, the confirmed death toll has reached 12, while three people remain missing and are presumed dead.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the collapse, with initial suspicions pointing to violations of occupational safety and building material quality. The mayor of Angeles City said those responsible would be dealt with firmly.
