Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes said it would be difficult for him to continue playing for the national team after receiving a 10-match ban for his role in a brawl following the defeat to Spain in the World Cup final.
The 32-year-old also cited Lionel Messi's decision to retire from international football as another reason to reconsider his future with the Albiceleste.
Paredes was sanctioned in August, weeks after the altercation erupted at the final whistle. He shoved Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground as substitutes from the champions rushed onto the field to celebrate.
Paredes faced three counts of assault, while teammate Nahuel Molina faced two. Both players were also fined $90,000.
"Staying with the national team will be very difficult for me," Paredes told Argentine media on Tuesday.
"Because of the suspension, because of Leo's decision… It's hard to imagine things continuing as before.
"I haven't spoken with the coach (Lionel Scaloni) yet, but we will talk and see what my decision is."
Paredes said Messi's absence would leave a huge void for the team.
"Leo's legacy will live on because of what he achieved, for never giving up, and showing that dreams must be pursued with effort and will eventually come true," Paredes added.
"We talked in the final days of the World Cup that the final would surely be his last match, but even so, we were not ready for it because he means so much to us."
Argentina will return to action with two friendlies in September. Their opponents have not yet been confirmed by the country's football federation.
The South American side will defend their Copa America title in the 2028 edition.
