Japan's Osaka Gas has launched a trial to convert used bioplastic food containers into energy, addressing the challenge of disposing of these materials despite government encouragement. The process involves gasification to produce syngas for power or heat, with initial results showing feasibility. The company aims to scale up and establish a circular supply chain for bioplastics.
Osaka Gas Co., one of Japan's leading energy conglomerates, has announced the results of a pilot project converting used bento boxes made from bioplastics into energy. The trial comes as finding efficient disposal methods for bioplastics remains a major hurdle, despite government efforts to promote these environmentally friendly materials.
According to Osaka Gas, the trial process involves collecting used bioplastic containers from convenience stores and restaurants, then processing them in a gasification facility. There, the bioplastics are burned or decomposed under controlled conditions to produce syngas, a fuel that can be used for power generation or heat production.
Initial trial results show that converting energy from bioplastics is feasible with a certain level of efficiency. However, the research team stressed that further studies are needed to optimize the process and assess the overall environmental impact compared to traditional waste treatment methods such as landfilling or conventional incineration.
Osaka Gas said the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote a circular economy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Turning bioplastic waste into energy not only helps solve the waste disposal problem but also contributes to creating local renewable energy sources, aligning with Japan's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
The company plans to scale up the trial and collaborate with partners in the food and retail sectors to establish a closed-loop supply chain for bioplastic containers, from production and use to energy recovery.
