A large explosion has been heard in the southern Yemeni city of Aden, according to an Al Jazeera correspondent and a local police official.

The police official said on Wednesday that smoke was rising near Aden airport, an area controlled by Yemen's internationally recognised government.

Reporting from Taiz, Yemen, Al Jazeera's Maha Ali said: "The Houthi group has targeted Aden airport with a ballistic missile."

Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had struck "the military operations room of the Saudi-led coalition at Camp Badr in Aden with a ballistic missile".

Saree said the strike "hit its target precisely and directly".
