Japanese player Kei Nishikori, who is expected to retire soon, took a major step forward at the US Open tennis tournament by defeating 16-year-old American Michael Antonius 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of qualifying on Wednesday.
The match was part of the men's qualifying draw, where Nishikori needs to win three rounds to earn a spot in the main draw. With this victory, the former world No. 4 is now just one match win away from the main field.
Despite the young opponent's spirited play and impressive shots, Nishikori showed superior composure and experience. He controlled the tempo well, securing a decisive break in each set to close out the match in straight sets, denying his rival any chance of a comeback.
Nishikori, who reached the US Open final in 2014, is entering the final stage of his career. He had previously announced plans to retire after the 2026 season. Advancing deep at the Grand Slam on American soil would be a fitting highlight for the nearly two-decade career of the player born in 1989.
In the final qualifying round, Nishikori will face an opponent determined after the remaining matches in his section conclude. If he wins, he will officially join the main draw at this year's US Open.
