Qatar's market is witnessing a sharp increase in shrimp consumption, creating favorable conditions for Iranian seafood exporters to expand their market share. This assessment was made during a recent trade promotion conference between the two countries.
According to seafood industry experts, Qatar relies heavily on imports to meet domestic demand. Local catch volumes are insufficient, while domestic consumption continues to rise due to population growth and a thriving tourism sector.
Iran, with its advantage of southern coastlines, particularly the Persian Gulf, holds significant potential in shrimp farming and harvesting. The Iranian seafood industry currently produces approximately 50,000 tons of shrimp annually, a substantial portion of which is designated for export.
A representative from the Iran Fisheries Organization stated that expanding into the Qatari market is part of a strategy to diversify trading partners. Iran already exports shrimp to several Asian and European countries, but the Gulf region remains a promising market due to geographical proximity and increasingly strengthened trade relations.
Iranian companies are also enhancing product quality and adopting modern processing procedures to meet Qatar's stringent standards. Additionally, the signing of bilateral trade agreements could provide further advantages in tariffs and logistics.
Analysts suggest that if this opportunity is fully leveraged, Iran's shrimp exports to Qatar could experience double-digit growth in the coming years, contributing to the economic development of Iran's southern coastal regions.
