Japan and Australia have agreed to strengthen cooperation on securing supplies of strategic minerals and energy, aiming to tackle geopolitical challenges and climate change, Kyodo News reported.
In a significant move to reinforce supply security, Japan and Australia have formally affirmed their commitment to bolster bilateral collaboration in the extraction and secure supply of strategic minerals and energy.
According to Kyodo News, the agreement comes amid volatile global energy markets and rising demand for critical raw materials essential for green technology. Key areas include rare earths, lithium, and other critical metals used in batteries, electric vehicles, and electronics.
Officials from both nations stressed that this cooperation aims to reduce supply chain risks, diversify sources, and accelerate the clean energy transition. It is seen as a strategic step in the security-energy partnership between Tokyo and Canberra, which has been reinforced through previous trade and defense agreements.
High-level talks are expected to continue to flesh out joint plans, including co-investment in mining and processing infrastructure in Australia.
