TOKYO — Japan's prime minister said on October 9 that Tokyo will take an "appropriate" response after a Chinese visit to Etorofu, one of the islands Japan considers part of the disputed Northern Territories it claims against Russia.
Speaking to reporters, the head of Japan's government said the administration would handle the matter appropriately, but did not give details on specific measures.
Etorofu is one of four islands Japan calls the "Northern Territories," currently administered by Russia and at the center of a long-running territorial dispute between the two countries. Chinese activity in the area is being closely watched by Tokyo.
The prime minister's announcement came as the parties involved have not released further details about the purpose of the visit or the composition of the delegation.
