Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi said on August 23 that Japan "takes very seriously" the US sanctions against leaders of the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to Kyodo News.
The remarks came as the US administration has recently moved to sanction senior ICC officials, raising concerns about the impact on the international court's operations.
The ICC, headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, is an independent international judicial body with jurisdiction over crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The US sanctions on ICC leaders have sparked controversy within the international community.
Japan, as one of the strong supporters of the international justice system, is believed to be weighing appropriate diplomatic responses amid escalating tensions between Washington and the ICC.
