According to data released on Monday (August 25) by a research firm, prices for 4,923 food and beverage items in Japan are expected to rise in September, more than triple the number from the same period last year. This also marks the highest monthly increase in over three years.
The survey was based on information gathered from major domestic manufacturers and distributors. The data shows that this round of price adjustments is widespread, covering many essential product categories, from processed foods and seasonings to carbonated drinks and dairy products.
Businesses mainly attribute the increases to higher costs for raw materials, logistics, and energy, which have squeezed profit margins. This price hike is expected to continue pressuring consumer spending, which has already faced escalating prices over the past several months.
Analysts say that this wave of price increases could affect consumer sentiment and add to difficulties for households, especially as real incomes show no clear signs of improvement. The Japanese government will likely need to consider support measures to ease the burden on citizens.
