Japan Urges Russia to Provide Information, Ensure Fair Treatment in Detained Journalist Case

On October 12, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Japan has asked Russia to promptly provide information regarding a Japanese journalist detained in Sakhalin, in Russia's Far East, on suspicion of espionage.

Speaking to reporters, Foreign Minister Motegi stated that Japan has requested Russia provide details about the case, while also ensuring a fair process for its citizen.

Earlier reports said the Japanese journalist was detained in Sakhalin on suspicion of espionage activities. The journalist's specific identity has not been widely disclosed, and Russia has not yet issued an official response to the reports.

Tokyo is closely monitoring developments in the case and will continue working with Russia to clarify the situation as well as the next steps in handling the journalist's case.
