Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a warning on June 19 about a tropical cyclone approaching from the Pacific Ocean that could make landfall on June 20.
According to the notice, heavy rain had already fallen in parts of western and eastern Japan, raising concerns about the risk of flooding and landslides. The agency urged residents to be on guard against strong winds, high waves and violent downpours that may accompany the storm.
Forecast tracks show the storm could directly affect coastal prefectures along the Pacific, including the Kanto and Tokai regions. Local authorities have been asked to prepare evacuation plans for residents if necessary.
This is the first storm of the 2026 typhoon season to be warned of a landfall on the Japanese mainland, following an unusual spell of heavy rain in early June.
