Protests took place in the Greek capital, Athens, on the day US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the country, in opposition to the United States' military presence in the Mediterranean nation.
Demonstrators gathered near the area where diplomatic activities were being held, carrying banners and chanting slogans in protest. Initial reports indicated that the crowd voiced concerns about the US role in the region as well as the military bases Washington maintains in Greece.
Rubio's visit was part of bilateral contacts between the two countries. The Greek side did not immediately comment on the scale and course of the protests.
Marches against foreign military presence have occurred several times in Greece in recent years, reflecting divisions in public opinion over the country's defense alliance relationship with the United States.
