Premier League 2026-27 preview: Arsenal aim to defend their title, Man City rebuild without Guardiola, while Chelsea, Liverpool, and Man United all chase glory. Predictions: Arsenal first, City second, Chelsea third.
With the 2026 World Cup in the rearview mirror, the footballing world turns its gaze back to the most captivating and wealthiest league on the planet – the Premier League. Arsenal enter the new season as defending champions after finally breaking their streak of three consecutive runner-up finishes. However, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea all signal their intent to challenge for the throne.
Arsenal – A King Seeking to Re-Establish a Dynasty
Arsenal delivered a commanding 2025-26 campaign, conceding just 27 goals, suffering only five defeats, and finishing with 85 points – a full seven clear of Manchester City. It was their first title since the fabled Invincibles season of 2003-04.
Refusing to rest on their laurels, the Gunners have continued to strengthen. They have brought in Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle and Christos Tzolis, while allowing Leandro Trossard to depart. The current squad strikes a perfect balance between ball control, defensive solidity, and danger from set pieces. The defensive trio of David Raya, William Saliba, and Gabriel forms a formidable barrier. Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard provide both steel and creativity in midfield, while Bukayo Saka remains the primary attacking threat.
Arsenal's potential vulnerability lies in the pressure of defending their crown and a heavy reliance on Saka for moments of inspiration. However, having overcome the psychological hurdle of ending their title drought, they possess all the tools to maintain their dominance. Prediction: Arsenal to successfully retain the title.
Manchester City – A Daunting Challenge in the Post-Guardiola Era
Manchester City enter the new season undergoing a significant transition. The legendary Pep Guardiola has departed, with Enzo Maresca taking the helm. The Etihad side have also lost two key pillars: Rodri (who moved to Barcelona) and Bernardo Silva. This is a substantial blow, particularly the loss of Rodri, who was widely considered the heartbeat of their playing style.
Nevertheless, City still boast Erling Haaland – the league's top scorer with 27 goals last season, earning his third Golden Boot. Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku, Omar Marmoush, and Rayan Cherki provide a wealth of options in attack. New signings Elliot Anderson and young talent Ayyoub Bouaddi are expected to inject youthful energy into midfield.
City's biggest weakness lies in midfield, where no single player can truly replicate Rodri's influence. Maresca must solve this complex puzzle. Prediction: City will finish second – they remain genuine title contenders, but the transition will test their mettle.
Chelsea – New Hopes Under Xabi Alonso
After several seasons mired in crisis, Chelsea have placed their faith in manager Xabi Alonso. With significant investment and no European football to distract them, the London club hold a major advantage in focusing their full resources on the Premier League.
Chelsea have made a statement signing in Morgan Rogers for a record £117 million, while allowing defender Marc Cucurella to leave. A squad of over 40 players could prove a double-edged sword, making it difficult for the manager to establish a consistent starting XI. The goalkeeper position also remains a concern, with Robert Sanchez having made more errors leading to goals than any other keeper last season.
Chelsea will need Cole Palmer to rediscover his scintillating 2024-25 form to be a decisive factor. Prediction: Chelsea to secure a third-place finish.
Liverpool – Rebuilding Under Andoni Iraola
Liverpool slipped from champions to fifth place last season, enduring 12 defeats and conceding 53 goals. The departure of Mohamed Salah has left a gaping hole in their attack, both in terms of goals and his role as an inspirational figurehead. Manager Andoni Iraola, renowned for his pressing and direct attacking style at Bournemouth, is expected to bring a new dynamism to Anfield.
The signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna is aimed at filling the Salah void, while Ronald Araujo (on loan from Barcelona) and Jeremy Jacquet have been brought in to shore up a defense that was their biggest weakness last term. Dominik Szoboszlai will be the creative hub, offering energy and technical quality. However, the defense remains a major question mark if Liverpool are to compete with Arsenal and City. Prediction: Liverpool to finish fourth.
Manchester United – Light at the End of the Tunnel
Manchester United approach the season with rare optimism after Michael Carrick was handed the job on a permanent basis. A third-place finish last season secured their return to the Champions League. The stability Carrick has instilled has dispelled the gloom that had settled over Old Trafford.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have been added to bolster midfield control, providing Bruno Fernandes with more freedom to flourish. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo offer a diverse attacking threat. However, a defense that conceded 50 goals last season – far more than Arsenal (27) and City (35) – coupled with a squad lacking in depth, remain critical weaknesses. Prediction: Manchester United to end the season in fifth place.
