As part of the World Expo Osaka 2025, a traditional crafts exhibition was held in Kyoto, bringing together artisans from Kyoto (Japan) and Vienna (Austria). The event not only showcased distinctive handmade products but also provided opportunities for artisans from both sides to meet, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
Michael Schmidt, a ceramic artist from Vienna, said: "I am very impressed with the glazing techniques of Kyoto artisans. There are many similarities in how we view natural materials, but our approaches are completely different. This has opened new creative directions for me."
On the Kyoto side, Yuki Tanaka, a veteran silk weaver, shared: "The precision and delicacy in the decorative details of Viennese artisans have made me reconsider how I use traditional patterns. We are currently experimenting with some combined techniques together."
The exhibition featured over 30 artisans from both cities, displaying products ranging from ceramics, textiles, and wood carving to jewelry. Organizers reported an average of around 2,000 visitors per day, and many pieces were sold on-site. Notably, some works were created through direct collaboration between a Kyoto artisan and a Viennese artisan at the venue, drawing special interest from collectors.
Following the exhibition's success, the two sides agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding to organize annual artisan exchange programs, each lasting from three to six months. Participating artisans will receive support for travel and accommodation costs, as well as opportunities to connect with collectors and potential customers in local markets.
Additionally, a follow-up exhibition is planned for Vienna next spring, marking the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In the meantime, artisans are staying in touch through online seminars and jointly developing a new collection titled "Two Cities, One Hand."
According to organizers, the personal relationships built during the exhibition are the most significant outcome. Tanaka emphasized: "We have not only expanded our customer network; more importantly, we have found like-minded friends to continue our creative journey."
