Russian strikes on Ukraine in the early hours of Sunday killed a woman and wounded at least seven others. At the same time, a Spanish fighter jet operating as part of NATO's intervention mission shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that had entered Romanian airspace.
According to the governor of Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a woman was killed and six other people were injured in a missile and drone attack on the city. Meanwhile, Kyiv authorities said the capital was hit by ballistic missiles on Saturday night, leaving one person injured and causing fires at non-civilian sites in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts.
In Romania, the Ministry of National Defense announced that a Spanish pilot flying an F-18 fighter jet as part of NATO's intervention mission shot down a UAV that had violated the country's airspace. This was the fourth UAV shot down over Romanian territory this year. The Romanian Defense Ministry did not identify the drone's origin, but the country has previously attributed similar incidents to Russia.
In July, a Romanian aircraft shot down a drone suspected to be of Russian origin, and in May, a stray drone injured two people in the city of Galati after colliding with a building. Romania shares a 634-kilometer border with Ukraine and has repeatedly recorded Russian drones entering its airspace as Moscow intensifies its air campaign against Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure.
Since launching its full-scale invasion in early 2022, Russia has maintained near-daily missile and drone attacks across Ukrainian territory, including in areas far from the front lines. The war's impact has also spread to critical sea routes in the region, with reports of drifting mines and naval drones in the Black Sea.
According to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission, the number of civilians killed in Ukraine in July reached its highest level since 2022, with at least 437 people killed and 2,610 injured. Meanwhile, in Russia, authorities reported a large-scale Ukrainian drone incursion on Sunday night. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defense systems shot down more than 100 drones heading toward the capital, with emergency services deployed at sites where debris fell, leaving three people injured.
