Russian officials reported more than 620 drones targeting Moscow overnight, in what is seen as one of Ukraine's largest attacks on the Russian capital in years.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defenses shot down 180 drones over the capital region from Monday evening until 5 a.m. (02:00 GMT) Tuesday. He added that 17 more drones were shot down on approach to the capital later.
Russia's state news agency TASS described the raid as the largest drone attack on Moscow in two years.
The attack wounded three people, including a 10-year-old girl, Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said on Telegram. He said the “most serious consequences” occurred in Pavlovsky Posad district, where a house was burned down. Several other homes and a guesthouse in Bogorodsky district were also damaged.
A warehouse of the e-commerce giant Wildberries, located east of Moscow, was damaged in the attack. In a statement, the company said its logistics complex suffered “minor damage” after “debris hit the building's wall.”
Ukraine has targeted several Wildberries warehouses in recent weeks, accusing the company of supplying components for Russian drones.
Also overnight, Ukraine's air force announced it had shot down or disabled 111 of 147 “enemy” drones.
Kharkiv region Governor Oleh Syniehubov said five people, including a 9-year-old boy, were wounded in a Russian attack on the city of Izyum. Russian drones also caused fires and damaged buildings in the city of Brovary in the Kyiv region, including an office building and warehouses.
With front-line fighting nearly stalemated and negotiations frozen, Ukraine and Russia have significantly increased long-range attacks, pushing civilian death tolls to their highest levels since the early months of the war in 2022. In July alone, 437 civilians were killed in Ukraine, the highest monthly toll since May 2022, according to UN figures. Russian officials also reported 79 civilian deaths in Ukrainian attacks in July, up from the previous month.
