The Russian military carried out a glide bomb attack on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, killing 5 people, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov.
In a Telegram post on Saturday, Fedorov said the Russian airstrikes also wounded 11 others, and that the toll could rise after the attack destroyed and damaged residential and non-residential buildings.
“Experts from the district administration are working at the scene to record the damage, and utility workers are dealing with the aftermath of the strike,” he added.
In recent weeks, Russia and Ukraine have escalated their attacks as negotiations to end the conflict remain deadlocked.
On Saturday morning, an aerial attack killed one person and wounded 9 others in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Mayor Ihor Terekhov said a woman was trapped under rubble after a “guided bomb attack” on a residential area.
“Sadly, during the search and rescue operation, the body of one person was found under the rubble of the destroyed building,” Terekhov said in a Telegram update. Authorities in Kherson, southern Ukraine, also reported that a 72-year-old woman was wounded in a drone attack in Zelenivka.
Major attack warning
In his nightly address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia is preparing for a “major attack.”
“Tonight and in the coming hours, it is especially important to pay attention to air raid warnings,” Zelenskyy said. “The Russians are preparing for a major attack. Please take care of yourselves,” he added.
Zelenskyy also confirmed that Ukraine's armed forces had targeted an oil refinery in Russia's Tyumen region in western Siberia.
For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday morning that its air defense systems shot down 187 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones across the country overnight. The latest drone attacks came two days after Ukraine launched its largest drone strike on Moscow, causing fires, hitting a major oil refinery, and forcing evacuations at the country's largest airport.
