On May 31, Naomi Osaka edged out young American Iva Jovic 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4 to secure her first-ever place in the fourth round of the French Open (Roland Garros). The match lasted over 2 hours 45 minutes on the Paris clay. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, had to survive tense tie-breaks in the opening two sets. In the decider, she broke serve in the ninth game before serving out the victory.

This is the deepest Osaka has advanced at Roland Garros, surpassing her previous third-round finish. Her next opponent will be sixth seed Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic.
