The US State Department on August 5 renewed its travel advisory for American citizens regarding North Korea, stating that they should not travel to the country "for any reason" due to the "serious risk" of arrest and long-term detention.
According to the official notice, the advisory emphasizes the treatment that North Korean authorities may apply to foreigners who violate local regulations, including charges of anti-state activities or actions deemed illegal under Pyongyang's laws.
The move comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, and the US has previously raised concerns about its citizens being detained in North Korea. The State Department also noted that US diplomatic missions have no presence in North Korea, making it very difficult to assist American citizens who encounter problems there.
The advisory follows similar recommendations issued by other countries for their citizens traveling to North Korea, a nation known for its isolationist policies and strict control over foreigners.
