US authorities are closely monitoring developments in Minnesota following a cyberattack that targeted dozens of community water systems this week. According to the Minnesota Department of Information Technology Services, more than 30 community water systems were affected in a "coordinated cyberattack."
Officials said the attack bears resemblance to incidents previously attributed to hackers linked to the Iranian government, though these assessments remain preliminary. Emily Zimmer, a spokesperson for the state's IT agency, noted that the timing, access methods, and targeted infrastructure share commonalities with other coordinated attacks observed by federal authorities on critical infrastructure.
On July 23, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed it is actively coordinating with victims. In a social media post, the FBI's cyber division acknowledged public reports related to the water and wastewater sector and emphasized its commitment to supporting critical infrastructure entities against cyber threats.
According to The New York Times, US government officials believe the attack was likely carried out by Iranian hackers. However, these officials cautioned that they have not yet definitively identified the perpetrators and that assessments may change as more data becomes available. They have not ruled out the possibility that hackers disguised themselves as a group linked to Tehran to escalate tensions with the US, which, along with Israel, has conducted military operations against Iran since late February. Some former intelligence officials consider the likelihood of a false flag operation to be low.
Regarding practical impact, local officials said that water wells and treatment plants in at least one city were temporarily shut down, but the incident had minimal effect, and there are no indications that the water supply has become unsafe for use.
The event comes amid heightened US-Iran tensions. A ceasefire memorandum signed in June collapsed, leading both nations to continue striking each other. The US recently carried out large-scale airstrikes on Iran, including on Qeshm Island, while Iran responded with attacks on US bases in Kuwait and Jordan. Recent attacks have also targeted civilian infrastructure such as bridges and water plants in Iran, while Iran has struck desalination plants in Gulf countries.
