Mexico began their home World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa, a team that ended the match with only nine players. The game took place at Estadio Azteca, the only venue to have hosted matches at three different World Cups.
Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the ninth minute, sliding a low shot through the legs of South Africa’s goalkeeper and captain, Ronwen Williams. Veteran striker Raul Jimenez sealed the victory in the 67th minute after a cutting pass from Roberto Alvarado.
South Africa failed to produce any surprises and turned in a poor performance. Sphephelo Sithole was sent off in the 49th minute for a foul on Brian Gutierrez. Themba Zwane also received a red card in the 84th minute after VAR determined he struck Alvarado in the face with his hand.
In the closing stages, Mexico defender Cesar Montes was also sent off for a crude challenge on Khuliso Mudau at the edge of the penalty area. Nevertheless, Mexico held on to secure the win and a strong start in Group A.
The atmosphere in the Estadio Azteca stands was electric, with 80,824 fans cheering continuously. South Africa coach Hugo Broos had warned his players about the intimidating atmosphere, but they still appeared overwhelmed.
