Lionel Messi made an emotional return to action for Inter Miami against Leon (Mexico) in the early hours of August 13, just hours after posting a heartfelt message questioning his playing future. Despite his presence, the Argentine superstar couldn't prevent a 2-3 defeat that sealed Inter Miami's elimination from the Leagues Cup group stage.
Messi flew back to Florida from Argentina on the evening of August 12, having attended the funeral of his father, Jorge Messi, who passed away at 68 after a prolonged illness. He came on at the start of the second half and received a warm ovation from the home fans.
Before the match, Messi posted an emotional tribute to his father on social media, writing: "I don't know what I'd do without him, I don't know how to go on. I just play football, and now I have serious doubts about whether to keep playing any longer."
Inter Miami took an early lead, but two goals from striker Daniel Arcila completed a comeback for Leon. The result made Leon the first team to secure a quarterfinal spot in the tournament featuring clubs from MLS and LigaMX.
Messi volunteered to play in the final group match despite having sat out the previous loss to Monterrey. Midfielder Yannick Bright, who scored for Inter Miami, called Messi's return "unbelievable" and said the team wanted to support their captain.
"I didn't think he'd play. It shows how much he cares about the team. When I saw him here, I just thought I had to give 150% for him. It's a tough situation, and we try to be there for him and support him as much as we can," Bright said.
Brazilian teammate Casemiro, who joined Inter Miami after the World Cup, described Messi as "an example for all of us" for his dedication during a difficult personal time. Leon's coach, Javier Gandolfi, also expressed admiration: "Today he showed his character once again. He's a different kind of person from the rest."
This is the first time Inter Miami has been eliminated in the group stage since the Leagues Cup was expanded in 2023. That year, the Florida side won the tournament with Messi alongside compatriots Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Last year, Inter Miami reached the final but lost 0-3 to Seattle Sounders in a match marred by post-match brawls that led to Luis Suarez being suspended for this year's competition.
