Marc Marquez claimed his 100th career victory at the Hungarian MotoGP, dominating the race weeks after surgery. He overtook Pedro Acosta in a thrilling duel to secure his first win of the season, entering an exclusive club with only Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi ahead.
Spanish rider Marc Marquez secured his 100th career victory across all categories with a dominant performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday at Balaton Park, less than a month after undergoing shoulder and leg surgery.
Marquez, 33, overtook KTM rider Pedro Acosta to finish first, marking his first win since last year's San Marino Grand Prix and his 74th victory in the MotoGP class.
The seven-time MotoGP champion's win was also a milestone for Ducati, as it marked the team's 100th victory, while teammate Francesco Bagnaia finished third.
“Super happy. A very valuable win because after last year, everything changed completely,” Marquez said, who also won the sprint from pole position on Saturday. “But that's sports. From one day to the next, everything can change. I learned this from 2020 (after a season-ending crash).”
Aprilia's nightmare in multi-rider collision
The race turned into a nightmare for the Aprilia team when Jorge Martin lost balance on the first lap at Turn 1, colliding with three other riders, including teammate and championship leader Marco Bezzecchi. The crash also involved Gresini Racing's Fermin Aldeguer and Trackhouse rider Raul Fernandez, taking out three Aprilia bikes from the race.
“I had a poor start, and when I began braking, I just saw something coming very fast,” Bagnaia said. “It was Martin coming at double speed, so maybe there were two people on the inside and he locked the front brake, because the new tarmac at Turn 1 is very slippery.” Both Martin and Bezzecchi were taken to the medical center, with Aprilia reporting that Martin suffered bruising to his back and right leg, while Bezzecchi sustained injuries to his right leg and hand, but neither showed signs of fractures.
Marquez and Acosta battle for victory
Up front, Acosta took the lead from the second lap, moving ahead in a thrilling fight as the KTM rider and Marquez repeatedly set fastest laps, pulling away from Bagnaia in third. The decisive moment came on lap 14 when Marquez overtook, but Acosta immediately responded, even nudging his compatriot near the final corner, but Marquez didn't lose his chance. Taking the lead at the chicane on the next lap, Marquez accelerated, building an overwhelming advantage and cruising to the finish as Acosta showed signs of tire trouble.
In a joyful moment, he stood on his bike as he crossed the finish line, then celebrated with a red flag bearing the number 100. The milestone puts Marquez in an exclusive club, becoming the third rider to reach 100 wins, alongside legends Giacomo Agostini (122) and Valentino Rossi (115). “We came back and worked hard. Some difficulties at the start of the season, but I knew here I had a big chance to win,” Marquez added. “I want to thank those who believed in me – the doctors, the physiotherapists, the hours of work at home. The reward is very valuable, but I'm happy to have another comeback.” Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura finished fourth, while Honda's Luca Marini rounded out the top five.
