Manchester United vs Tottenham: The 'El Sackicko' Battle at Old Trafford
Kevin Hand, Al Jazeera English
Manchester United and Tottenham meet at Old Trafford under heavy pressure on both managers, Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi, in a fixture the media has labelled 'El Sackicko'. Tottenham are bottom with 2 points from 5 games, while United have won just once.
Match information: Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur, Premier League matchday 6, 16:30 GMT on Saturday, October 9, at Old Trafford.
Manchester United and Tottenham were once accustomed to competing near the top of the Premier League, even if in recent years their target has usually been a Champions League place rather than the title. But this season both are mired in crisis, and the meeting at Old Trafford carries survival-level significance for both head coaches.
Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham sit bottom of the table with just 2 points from 5 matches. Manchester United have also won only once in the same span, and if Tottenham win, the two sides will be level on points. The match has been nicknamed 'El Sackicko' by the media, a nod to the dismissal risk facing both managers.
Carrick concerned about Manchester City case
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick, despite facing plenty of problems of his own, has called for a swift resolution to Manchester City's financial case, saying the drawn-out process raises many questions and affects him personally.
Last month, an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the Premier League's financial rules over nine seasons, from 2009-10 to 2017-18, plus three of four charges of failing to cooperate with the investigation. Manchester City, currently top of the table with a perfect record after 5 matches, have denied wrongdoing and appealed.
Carrick, who spent 12 years at Manchester United from 2006 to 2018 and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League, said: "It raises a lot of questions. Because it's ongoing, we don't know how long it will drag on. It affects me personally in different ways."
Asked whether he would want the titles lost to Manchester City handed back, Carrick said he would wait until the process ends. "Either way, medals in any sport, you get them later and it's proven at different times. But the moment you crave is winning right there and then," he added.
De Zerbi calls on Tottenham to respond
Roberto De Zerbi has urged bottom-of-the-table Tottenham to "respond" to the pressure of the clash with Manchester United. Spurs are waiting for a chance to erase the frustration of a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa in their last match before the international break.
With pressure building, the Italian coach has demanded his players stand up against Manchester United. "I've been waiting for this game for three weeks. After the home defeat to Villa, personally I wanted to play the very next day. It was difficult, especially the first week. But that's football. We have to respond, we have to work at this moment," De Zerbi said.
Tottenham need to improve their scoring
Tottenham failed to score in their first 4 Premier League matches before finding the net twice against Aston Villa. De Zerbi admitted his side must improve their attack if they are to climb out of the bottom group.
"We created chances to score more goals in these 7 matches but didn't manage it. We are working to improve in the final third, our creation and our finishing. We rank fourth for entries into the opposition box. That shows we can get into the box, but we're not good enough at scoring when we have clear chances," he said.
Will Carrick or De Zerbi survive?
With Carrick also under pressure after a poor start, Tottenham's trip to Manchester has been dubbed 'El Sackicko'. De Zerbi saved Tottenham from relegation after arriving late last season, but that achievement is unlikely to save him if results do not improve soon.
"We are Tottenham. Manchester United and Tottenham are still big Premier League clubs. We have to deserve to work at this club by playing better and getting different results," De Zerbi stressed.
Head-to-head history
The last time the two sides met was in February at Old Trafford, when Manchester United won 2-0. Cristian Romero was sent off in the 30th minute for Tottenham, after which Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes scored for Manchester United.
Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in May 2025 thanks to a goal from Brennan Johnson. That match was also the last Ange Postecoglou managed Spurs before being sacked over poor league form. Ruben Amorim suffered the same fate the following season.
Tottenham's last win at Old Trafford came in the 2024-25 season, when they won 3-0 in the Premier League. Johnson opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes was sent off just before half-time, and Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke completed the win in the second half.
This will be the 205th meeting between the two sides, with Manchester United winning 96 matches to Tottenham's 56.
