Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca remained tight-lipped about Rodri's future amid speculation linking the Spanish midfielder with Barcelona. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Community Shield clash against Arsenal, he said: 'The transfer window is still open, we can buy and sell players, anything can happen.'
The uncertainty emerged after a photo purportedly showing Rodri on a budget Ryanair flight from Madrid to Liverpool circulated on social media. The Ballon d'Or winner was seen carrying a small suitcase featuring his name, national team flag, and shirt number. However, reports suggest Real Madrid have cooled their interest due to the prohibitive transfer fee.
Maresca confirmed Rodri has returned to training following back surgery in late July: 'I just saw Rodri in the building, gave him a big hug, he looks fine. We'll see what happens.'
The Italian coach was also asked about reports that Chelsea have set a Friday deadline for offers for Enzo Fernandez, but he smiled and said City would not be making any new signings on Friday.
Maresca stressed his focus is on the final against Arsenal, not the market: 'There are certainly things we need to do. Right now, I don't know how many, maybe one, maybe two players. It also depends on players leaving. 48 hours before my first final at this club, the focus is to prepare as best as possible to win.'
The 44-year-old dismissed the notion that the Community Shield is merely a ceremonial friendly: 'For me personally, it's a trophy. When there's a trophy and a final, you always try to win. There are no friendlies here.' This is Maresca's first chance to win silverware with City after replacing Pep Guardiola at the end of last season.
