A mass funeral has been held for 75 Palestinians whose remains were recently recovered from the rubble of homes and buildings destroyed in the months after Israel launched its military campaign in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
Hundreds of Palestinians joined the funeral procession before the remains were buried at the Sheikh Radwan cemetery on Sunday morning.
According to the Health Ministry, most of the victims came from the Daraj neighborhood in northeastern Gaza City.
Al Jazeera correspondent Nour Khaled said most of the remains were those of women and children who "were inside their homes when they were attacked." The remains, which included partial body parts and personal belongings, were wrapped in Palestinian flags before burial, the correspondent said.
Abdullah al-Majdalawi, director of public relations and media for the Gaza Civil Defence, told Turkey's Anadolu news agency that the remains had been recovered in recent weeks from a number of destroyed homes in Daraj.
According to al-Majdalawi, the buildings were bombed while residents were still inside during the early months of the war, and the victims belonged to about 20 Palestinian families, including people who had been displaced to these homes.
He said efforts to recover bodies from the rubble remain difficult because of a lack of equipment and heavy machinery.
The Gaza Civil Defence launched the second phase of its recovery operation in July. In its first campaign, in November 2025, it recovered the bodies and remains of 333 and 559 people respectively.
According to the Civil Defence, the remains of an estimated 8,000 Palestinians are still buried under the rubble across Gaza. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says about 200,000 buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed.
According to figures cited, at least 74,475 Palestinians have been killed since the war in Gaza began three years ago.
