Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a decree on Sunday appointing Major General Hossein Salami as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), replacing General Mohammad Ali Jafari, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Salami, who served as the deputy commander of the IRGC, will officially assume his new role. He is regarded as a seasoned officer with extensive experience within the force. The appointment comes as Iran faces multiple security and economic challenges, as well as tensions with the United States.
Jafari, who had led the IRGC since 2007, will transition to a new position designated by the Supreme Leader. He is known for directing the force's operations for years, including involvement in regional conflicts.
The IRGC is Iran's elite military force, playing a crucial role in defending the regime and carrying out military operations across the Middle East. The leadership change is seen as an effort to bolster the force's capabilities amid the current complex developments.
