Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has issued a decree appointing Major General Mohammad Bagheri as the Chief of Staff of the country's armed forces, replacing General Abdollahi. The decision was announced on July 2, according to Iranian state media.
The move is part of a plan to restructure military command to enhance coordination between the regular armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Major General Bagheri, 54, has held key command positions in the IRGC and has combat experience from the Iran-Iraq war.
According to analysts, the appointment reflects efforts to consolidate the IRGC's role in the national security framework, as Iran faces multiple regional security challenges and international sanctions. General Abdollahi, who had held the position since 2019, will move to an advisory role at the Supreme Leader's office.
