Senior representatives from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) visited Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on Tuesday, according to Kyodo News.
The shrine honors approximately 2.5 million people who died in wars from the 19th century to the mid-20th century, including convicted war criminals from World War II. Visits by Japanese politicians often provoke strong objections from China, South Korea, and other nations that were invaded by Japan.
The visit comes amid already strained diplomatic relations in Northeast Asia. Analysts suggest the move could intensify international criticism and raise questions about Japan's stance on historical reconciliation.
