La Liga, Spain's top flight, kicks off its 2026-27 season on Saturday (August 15), with many players returning to action less than a month after the World Cup concluded. Barcelona, with eight players who helped Spain win the 2026 World Cup, enters the season targeting a third straight title after clinching the championship in 2024-25 and 2025-26.
However, eternal rivals Real Madrid, under veteran coach Jose Mourinho, are seeking to regain their status after two seasons without major silverware. The title race between these two clubs promises to be compelling, even though neither will play in the opening round.

According to Opta's supercomputer, Barcelona has a 45.6% chance of winning a third consecutive title, which would bring their total La Liga tally to 30. If successful, it would mark the first time Barca have won three straight titles since Pep Guardiola's golden era (2008-2011).
Real Madrid is projected to have a 31% chance of winning under Mourinho, who previously managed the club from 2010 to 2013. Atletico Madrid, which finished fourth last season without a trophy, has an 8.6% chance of the title. Villarreal (3.3%) and Real Betis (2.1%) follow behind.
Relegation Candidates
Sevilla, a club that struggled to stay up in the last two seasons, has a 27.7% probability of being relegated. Newly promoted Deportivo, returning to La Liga for the first time since 2017-18, is the most likely candidate for the drop at 29.2%, followed by Elche at 28.4%.

Real Madrid has been very active in the summer transfer market. They have signed right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, and center-back Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer after he left Liverpool.
