According to an announcement from the Japan Football Association, forward Takefusa Kubo will wear the No. 8 jersey at the 2026 World Cup, replacing Takumi Minamino, who is unable to participate due to injury.
The No. 8 shirt has previously been associated with Minamino, a key figure for the Samurai Blue. However, with his injury, the head coach has decided to entrust this role to Kubo, who currently plays in La Liga.
Kubo, 25, impressed during the past season with Real Sociedad. He is expected to be a leading force in Japan's attack at this World Cup, alongside teammates Daichi Kamada and Ritsu Doan.
Wearing the No. 8 jersey is not only about inheriting a position but also carries significant responsibility for Kubo, as he shared in a press conference: 'This is a great honor. I will do my best to live up to the trust of my teammates and fans.'
The 2026 World Cup will take place in North America, and Japan is in a group considered challenging. However, with an infusion of young talent, the team aims to advance further than in the previous tournament.
