India's pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, has been officially ruled out of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka this month as he continues to recover from a left knee injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news on Monday.
To replace Bumrah, the BCCI has called up uncapped young pacer Auqib Nabi. The 32-year-old, who has yet to represent the national team, has been brought in as a like-for-like replacement.
Bumrah sustained the injury while bowling in the One-Day International (ODI) against England at Cardiff in July. He had been included in the preliminary squad subject to passing a final fitness test and underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Nabi, 29, from Jammu and Kashmir, earned his maiden national call-up after impressing hugely in domestic cricket. He has taken 104 wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons.
In the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, Nabi claimed 60 wickets, playing a key role in his state team's first-ever title triumph. He had earlier been part of the India A tour of Sri Lanka in June-July, taking six wickets in two first-class matches.
Nabi becomes the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to be named in an official India Test squad.
The BCCI also said that the availability of batter Sai Sudharsan remains subject to a fitness test.
The Test series between India and Sri Lanka is set to begin at Galle on August 15, with the second match scheduled in Colombo from August 23.
