On June 28, 2024, Iran held a ceremony marking the 39th anniversary of the chemical attack on the northwestern city of Sardasht, denouncing the war crime and demanding justice for the victims.
During the event, Iranian officials stressed that the poison gas attack, carried out by Iraq in 1987 during the Iran-Iraq War, killed thousands and left many with permanent disabilities. Sardasht was one of the first cities to be attacked with chemical weapons since World War I.
Speaking at the ceremony, Iran’s foreign minister called on the United Nations and international organizations to act to bring those responsible to justice. He also criticized the international community's silence over similar crimes in ongoing conflicts.
According to statistics, more than 3,000 people in Sardasht were exposed to chemical toxins, many of whom continue to suffer from health consequences such as respiratory diseases, cancer, and skin lesions. Iran urged the world not to forget these pains and to act to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
