On 12 December, Iran and Kyrgyzstan formally signed a bilateral cooperation agreement focusing on two main areas: border security and combating drug crime. The agreement was signed in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek during a visit by senior Iranian officials.
Under the deal, the two sides will enhance coordinated border patrols, exchange intelligence on drug smuggling networks, and provide joint training for law enforcement forces. This is seen as a step to stem the flow of narcotics from Afghanistan via Central Asian routes.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Iran’s Deputy Interior Minister Ahmad Reza Radan stressed: “Cooperation with Kyrgyzstan is necessary to protect regional security and prevent cross-border crime.” Kyrgyzstan, in turn, pledged to facilitate coordinated operations.
The new accord is expected to further strengthen already solid bilateral ties and contribute to international efforts in the fight against drugs in Central and West Asia.
