Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on March 1, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stressed that 'the ball has long been in America's court,' adding that Washington needs to make a political decision to save the 2015 nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
'If the Americans have real goodwill, the diplomatic door remains wide open,' Amir-Abdollahian said, emphasizing that Iran is ready to negotiate directly or indirectly to reach a good and sustainable agreement.
The statement came as talks between Iran and world powers in Vienna have dragged on for months without a final conclusion. A key sticking point is Washington's lifting of financial and oil sanctions, as well as Tehran's commitment to scaling back its nuclear program.
The U.S. and Iran have repeatedly blamed each other for the delays. Washington has said it continues to support the diplomatic path, while Iran demands guarantees that any new agreement will not be scrapped by a future administration in the White House.
Analysts say that as long as economic and political leverage is not balanced, the chances of reaching a new deal in the short term remain very difficult.
