Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on [date unknown] that US violations must end before Tehran and Washington can resume negotiations. The statement came as relations between the two countries remain tense after years of conflict and disagreement.
Speaking at a press conference, Araghchi stressed: “US violations must end, and then we can return to the negotiating table.” He did not specify the violations, but alluded to the sanctions and economic pressure Washington has imposed on Tehran.
Iran has repeatedly expressed willingness to talk but insists negotiations must be based on mutual respect and free from threats or pressure. The US under President Joe Biden has said it wants to resume nuclear talks, but indirect negotiations in Vienna have stalled for months.
Iran has accused the US of failing to uphold its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), particularly regarding sanctions relief. The US withdrew from the deal in 2018 under President Donald Trump and reimposed sanctions, prompting Iran to respond by boosting uranium enrichment.
Araghchi's latest remarks suggest progress in US-Iran relations remains elusive as both sides hold firm positions. Analysts say resuming talks requires concessions from both sides, but there are few signs that will happen soon.
