On October 24, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is entirely under Iran’s authority, and no other country or organization can intervene in the matter.
Speaking at a press conference, Araghchi emphasized that Tehran holds full sovereignty and responsibility for maritime security in this strategically vital region. The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint, with about 20% of global oil passing through daily.
According to the Iranian diplomat, any change in the strait’s operational status requires Tehran’s review and approval. He also warned that unilateral actions from outside could escalate regional tensions.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the West over the nuclear program and economic sanctions. The Strait of Hormuz has previously been the focal point of several military and diplomatic confrontations.
No official response from relevant countries has been issued so far.
