A senior Iranian official said on June 6 that the United States needs to take practical steps rather than merely issuing statements, as negotiations to restore the landmark 2015 nuclear deal remain deadlocked.
Speaking to the press, the official stressed that Tehran expects Washington to act concretely to demonstrate goodwill, rather than stopping at diplomatic signals. The demand comes as the two sides continue indirect exchanges through European intermediaries.
Earlier, several rounds of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) were held in Vienna to seek the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which the US unilaterally withdrew in 2018 under President Donald Trump.
Iran has repeatedly affirmed its stance of safeguarding national interests while urging Western parties to abandon a coercive approach. Tehran has also stressed that any agreement must include the full lifting of economic sanctions and guarantee the country's rights.
Analysts suggest the latest statement reflects Iran's caution regarding commitments from President Joe Biden's administration, despite Washington's expressed desire to return to the deal. The talks remain at a critical stage as both sides work to narrow differences on technical issues related to the nuclear program and sanctions relief.
