On December 10, Iran sent a diplomatic note to the United Nations, calling on the organization to intervene over the US naval blockade in the Gulf. Tehran insists that Washington's actions are illegal, violating international law and UN resolutions.
According to Iranian representatives, the deployment of US warships and the increased military presence in the region have hindered freedom of navigation and endangered global energy security. Tehran contends that these measures amount to a blockade, directly affecting its oil exports.
In its note, Iran urged the UN Security Council to condemn the US actions and demand an immediate halt. Tehran also warned that without preventive steps, the situation could lead to "grave consequences" for regional peace and security.
The move comes amid continued US-Iran tensions following Washington's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018 and the reimposition of sanctions. The US and the UN have yet to officially respond to Tehran's request.
