Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday urged the BRICS group of emerging economies to move from dialogue to substantive action, stressing the need to turn policy commitments into concrete outcomes.
Speaking at the ongoing BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, Pezeshkian argued that BRICS must assert its position as one of the most influential economic and political centers in the world today, and to do so, the bloc must act decisively.
The Iranian leader also highlighted BRICS's role in promoting a multipolar world order and reducing dependence on traditional financial institutions. He emphasized that the early implementation of bilateral payment mechanisms in local currencies would enhance trade among member states and mitigate risks from exchange rate fluctuations.
Iran, which officially became a BRICS member in 2024, views the bloc as a strategic opportunity to boost economic cooperation with major economies such as China, Russia, India, Brazil, and South Africa. The summit brought together leaders of member nations along with several invited countries.
According to observers, Pezeshkian's call reflects the desire of newer members like Iran and the UAE for BRICS to establish clear operational mechanisms rather than merely issuing joint political statements.
