Iranian officials on May 20 announced the detailed funeral schedule for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who passed away on May 19 at a hospital in Tehran. According to the plan, a viewing ceremony will be held at the Musalla Hall in the capital Tehran on May 21 for the public to pay their respects.
His coffin will be taken to the holy city of Qom on May 22, then to the shrine city of Mashhad for people to honor him. The burial is scheduled for May 24 at the mausoleum of the first leader, Ruhollah Khomeini, south of Tehran.
Tens of thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets in mourning, while leaders from many countries have sent condolences. Iran has declared five days of national mourning.
His son, Hojatoleslam Mohammad Khamenei, will temporarily assume leadership until the Assembly of Experts elects a successor. The election is expected to be held within the next 50 days.
