In a rare social media move, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Tuesday posted a play on former U.S. President Donald Trump's famous slogan, replacing "great" with "hungry." The post quickly drew the attention of observers, seen as a jab at Washington's maximum pressure policy against Tehran.
The original slogan, "Make America Great Again," was a symbol of Trump's campaign; the altered version, "Make America hungry again," is a sarcastic reference to U.S. economic sanctions that have left Iranians facing shortages and high inflation.
The U.S. State Department spokesperson has not yet issued an official response. However, this is not the first time Iranian officials have used online language to respond to the U.S. administration. Previously, when Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, Iranian officials also posted similar satirical images on various platforms.
Analysts say the move reflects Tehran's toughness in the face of international pressure and is also a way for the Iranian government to bolster national morale amid stalled nuclear talks. Iran still rejects direct dialogue with the U.S., while Washington continues to tighten sanctions.
The development comes just days after U.S. President Joe Biden said he would maintain a tough policy toward Iran if it does not return to full compliance with nuclear terms. Meanwhile, Tehran insists its nuclear program is purely peaceful.
