Tehran – On February 27, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani sharply criticized recent US attacks on an Indian oil tanker in international waters, calling the actions 'piracy' and a serious violation of international maritime rules.
According to a statement from Tehran, US warships intercepted and inspected two Indian-flagged oil tankers in the Indian Ocean, subsequently confiscating cargo without the consent of the shipowners. Iran argued that this behavior not only threatens maritime security but also escalates regional tensions.
'This is blatant piracy, violating international law and maritime conventions,' Kanaani emphasized during a press conference. 'We call on the international community to strongly condemn and prevent such actions.'
In response, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the inspections but stated they were conducted in accordance with international law to prevent the illegal smuggling of Iranian oil. Washington reiterated that sanctions against Tehran remain in place.
The incident occurs amid ongoing US-Iran tensions, particularly regarding the nuclear program and economic sanctions. India, as a directly involved party, has not yet issued an official reaction to the incident.
