Iranian authorities say security forces have arrested 39 people accused of being mercenaries, amid a stepped-up crackdown on incidents described as undermining security and damaging property.
The announcement comes after Iran has repeatedly publicized arrests in recent months targeting individuals alleged to have ties to foreign forces or to have taken part in disruptive activities. Officials have not released details about the identities of those detained, where the arrests took place, or the course of the investigation.
Iranian authorities said they would continue to deal firmly with acts deemed a threat to security and public order, and called on the public to cooperate by providing information when they notice suspicious signs.
